Alton Bess

Alton Jerome "Sarge" Bess, 82, of Fayetteville, died Monday, May 21, 2018 in his home surrounded by family.

Born November 23, 1935 in Ward, WV, he was the son of the late Denver and Syrene Bess.

Sarge served over for 24 years in U.S. Army before retiring in 1976. During his service, he completed tours in Korea and Vietnam, and received numerous commendations and medals. Upon retiring, Sarge spent his time working in the yard, tinkering on cars, and enjoying moments with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia Bess; daughter, Yvonne Benson and husband Sandy; daughter, Shelia Clemmons and husband Jerry; siblings, Benard, Bonnie, and Madge; grandchildren, Ginger, Nicky, and Lane; and great grandchildren, Amber and Jose.

Sarge was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
