Cuyler LaRue "Sonny" Windham, Sr., 82, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2019 in his home.
Born in Darlington County, he was the son of the late Raymond Baxter Windham and Zeloise Parnell Windham.
Sonny was employed with the FBI for 12 years from 1955 to 1967 and the SBI for 27 years from 1967 to 1994. During his employment with the SBI, he served as Asst. Director from 1974 to 1985 and Senior Asst. Director from 1985 to 1994. In 1971, Sonny was the recipient of the 1st place award for outstanding young law enforcement officer from the N.C. Jaycees. He also served as President of the Christian Peace Officers Assn., Cumberland Chapter in Fayetteville. After his service with the SBI, Sonny worked with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Dept. as Chief Deputy Sheriff from 1994 to 2008.
Sonny was a past member and Deacon of Southview Baptist Church, and current member and Deacon of Village Baptist Church. He was also a mason at Lebanon Lodge 391 in Hope Mills.
Being a season ticket holder for 39 years, Sonny was an avid USC Gamecocks fan. He loved his grandsons dearly and enjoyed taking them fishing in his spare time.
Sonny is survived by his wife, Mary Windham; two sons, C. LaRue Windham, Jr., and David Windham and wife Beth; and two grandsons, Cuyler L. Windham III, and Wyatt Windham.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of one's choice.
