Stanley W. (Stan the Man) Johnson, 95, of Hope Mills, died Monday, July 2, 2018.

Born on September 29, 1922, he was the son of the late Paul V. and Lena Trogdon Johnson. He is also preceded in death by his older brother, Vernon Johnson, who died in infancy, brothers, Jim, Bob and Dwain; a sister, Marie Mills; a nephew Bobby Johnson; and his son, Stan Johnson, Jr.

Stan is survived by his wife of 70 years, Glenn B. Johnson; sons, Randy and Mark Johnson of Hope Mills; sister, Betty Ann Madison; brothers, Allen Johnson and wife Geraldine and Joe Johnson and wife Jeri; granddaughters, Angela Adams and husband Mike, and Christie Suarez and husband Juan; grandsons, Ryan, Garrett, and Keith and wife Xeazil; six great grandchildren; a number of nephews and nieces; sisters-in-law, Meryle Johnson and Nancy Johnson; and two daughters-in-Law, Tina Honey and Cathy Johnson.

In 1942, Stanley enlisted in the Navy and served in WWII before receiving an Honorable Discharge in December 1945. Upon completion of his military service, Stan began working with the US Postal Service and retired after 30 years as Post Master of Hope Mills. At that time, he began working at Cumberland County ABC until his retirement of 20 years. After that retirement, he began his service as Assistant Sergeant at Arms at the NC Senate in NC Legislation in Raleigh from age 75 until short of his 90th birthday. He was awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine at the conclusion of his service with the NC Senate. During his life he was involved in many civic clubs and activities. He served on numerous committees throughout Cumberland County, and was a lifelong member of Cotton Methodist Church in Hope Mills, serving as Sunday School Superintendent for numerous years. He was a Shriner, 32nd degree Mason, an Eastern Star, and a local School Board Member for Hope Mills and South View HS. He was also past Commander of Hope Mills Post 32 American Legion, a Volunteer Fireman for Hope Mills for over 25 years, an Auxiliary Police Officer for Hope Mills from 1973 through 2010, and a past Precinct Chairman for the Democratic Party. Stan was on the Board of Directors for Rockfish Credit Union, Southern National Bank, and BB&T Bank in Hope Mills. He was a Charter Member of the Massey Hill Lions Club and Past President for Hope Mills Lions Club and received the CJ Wiggs outstanding Lion award for District 31F. He was on the Board of Directors for the Cumberland Parks and Rec, Board of Directors of the Auditorium Commission, and Board of Community Action. He also served a term on Cumberland County ABC Board and was Chairman before retirement. He was a volunteer for Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the Adult Silver Beaver Leadership Award. He was also a past Member of the Hope Mills Lake Board and a past Chairman of the Hope Mills Chamber Of Commerce.
